Falling in Love

This is a candid photo taken of a young couple viewing the Lower Spokane Falls in Spokane, Washington. I was trying to capture his macho indifference and her feminine adoration.

Image was captured using an Olympus OM-D E-M5 with Olympus 12-50mm @ 43mm, f/8, 1/200 sec., Hoya NXT polarizing filter, handheld.

Raw file was imported to Lightroom 5, then processed in Photoshop Elements using Nik Dfine 2 and Nik Color Efex Pro 4 filters. Dfine was applied twice, once in automatic mode to the overall image for general noise reduction, and a second time to her skin and shirt to soften her a bit. Color Efex was used to convert to B&W, but with only 50% strength to her shirt and skin.

I think you succeeded in capturing his attitude but it’s making her look kind of needy, in my opinion.

I don’t think the post processing has worked out very well for her skin tones on her face, looks kind of dusky to me.

I like the rest of the composition though, if you have some other poses with the same set up…

Oh good grief. How right you are, @aarongeis. This is actually a problem in the original raw, compounded by the stray hairs across her cheek. Here’s a new edit. I used the adjustment brush in Lightroom to lighten the shadows and reduce the clarity in her facial features, which eliminated some variations in her skin tone, and then brushed out the stray hairs in Photoshop Elements before processing as described above. This looks a lot better. Thanks for pointing that out.

I personally like the fact that it makes her look needy. It tells so much more then just a stereotypical shot. One thing though – selective color. I don’t like it ever, but in this shot it seems so unnecessary.

Hi Jerry….like it….lot of thought and effort gone in to an image telling a story….selective colour can be overdone but this is a good example,as you have kept the colour muted….like it!! 🙂
