I am finding that I like to do silhouettes but would like to get the contrast on the edges of the black parts sharper and more distinct. Is there a magic thingy in Photoshop or Lightroom that might do the trick? Could it be the camera or the lens? Probably the photographer! 1/500, f5.6, iso100

Allows Edits? YesThis looks really powerful and clean-cut in a great way! Speaking of sharpening, you can do selective sharpening in Lightroom by using the masking slider. In case you don’t know what I mean, check this article out, directly from Adobe – https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-cc/how-to/sharpen-photos.html#:~:text=The%20Masking%20slider%20allows%20you,areas%20with%20only%20strong%20edges.

Hi Jasenka and thank your for your comment! Yes, I know about and have used the sharpen mask in LR and thanks for the reminder. I would like to use something to fill in the edges to make them more of a solid line. I’m probably not explaining it very well and I was asking because I’m not really up on the latest post stuff. I’m having a new super duper (for me) camera delivered today and will try that out with a 70-200 f2.8 and see it the edges look different/better with better equipment. Probably not, “it’s the wizard not the wand”. I love the f2.8 lens except it’s so big and bulky for walk around photography and I can’t talk or bribe my wife wife into carrying it for me. Do you think that a better lens and more mega pixels will help much? BTW, I just tried the LR sharpening and can’t see a difference. I did use a Topaz Labs AI sharpening thing when I processed this so there is probably not much more to do. Thanks again!

Allows Edits? YesYou’re welcome. I have never worked with Topaz Labs AI so it’s hard for me to compare the effects of Lightroom vs Topaz Labs sharpening.

I have most of the Topaz stuff and am pretty happy with it. However, it’s like a racket because they come out with updates at least once a year and it gets expensive staying up to date, so I don’t.

Allows Edits? YesHi Lenny, I like this photo a lot with the slight details on the face of the subject and the structure. I think the hard edges is because of the contrasting shadows created by the light?

Allows Edits? Yes@el-dub I’m not sure if this is what your after Lenny, I do this with photos as silhouettes before processing on the vinyl plotter.
In Photoshop open two windows with your image in it, on one of them under the image tab then mode ,change the mode to indexed color, I used these settings.
then change it back to RGB color.
Then clicking on the layer make a duplicate targeting the other window with your photo in it.
Go to that window and on the layers tab you will see the two layers listed similar to this.
I set the blending on the new layer to Overlay and the opacity to 58% as in the picture then I flattened the image for this result.
You can tweak any of these setting to get your desired result.

Allows Edits? NoHi Lenny, to get the contrast on the edges of the black parts sharper and more distinct you can try this in Photoshop:
1 – Quick Select object
2 – go to Select and Mask
3 – In Select and Mask you will see a window come up – you will see sliders for Smooth, Feather, Contrast and Shift edge. Add a little Smooth (about 8), Add a little Feather then Add about 67% Contrast (this is where some of the magic comes in as you start to see the edges get sharper) then last is the Shift Edge slider (Now the Real Magic happens) Reduce the Shift Edge slider until you see sharp distinct lines – no more jagged edges.
*Each photo will be different – just play with the sliders until you get the desired look you want – add smooth until you start to see the bumps go away, add a little feather, then add the contrast until you see that banding affect go away – I found 67% worked good on this photo. Then reduce the Shift Edge slider until the edges are sharp and distinct.
Click ok and you now have clear sharp distinct lines – if the mask takes out some of the areas you can always adjust the mask by painting in white to reveal – I found it took out his nose so I corrected the mask to reveal it again.
I attached a photo so you can see how this looks and see if this is what you are looking for.
I also did a Levels Adjustment layer and adjusted the midtones to enhance the black in the silhouette.

Frog, I have printed your instructions for future use. Thanks!

Quick and easy method in PS Lenny.
– Open a curves adjustment and pull the bottom left over until all the silhouette is black.(optional for this image …paint black on the curves mask where the lights fixtures are)
– Control-shift-M to flatten the image
– Then go to …Select/Color-range/click on black in the image/click OK.
– Then go to …Select/Modify/Feather/set feather to about 2 or so/click OK
– Take a black brush and paint over the whole image…Curves and feather are adjustable to what ever looks right to you. This is what I got with these settings. (before feathering you could also expand the selection as another quick option)

Allows Edits? YesGreat thread. For me, I’d be looking for a little more detail in the blacks, but the composition is effective and tells the story well.
