Allows Edits? Yeslol – I gotta admit, in general, I like matte – especially for black and white photography, but it really depends on the situation.
Matte would probably not look so great for most macro shots for example.

Glossy for glossy images…. SLK Mercedes for example π
Some of my impact B/w requires Glossy. But some of my best work looks fab on a quality matte rag paper.

I prefer matte, personally, but I agree that it really does depend on the image. I actually really like a nice lustre print, too. A little bit of the best of both worlds. A nice textured finish like matte, and really good color saturation like a glossy.

Thoughts on printing! It can the toughest part of photography at least for me! Using the camera or computer is pretty easy in comparison! When something goes wrong most of the time it can be figured out easily. Printing is doable but not so easy.
I do a little of my own printing. I donβt have the space nor do I want the investment in the better printer I would want. It is just not worth it.
I have been through several printing services! Local and online!
The local guys were not very likable and didnβt seem to care if they got my business! It was mostly about attitude and they did me a favor because I looked elsewhere and found better prices and printing.
I tried shutter fly! There service is fairly good because every tine there was a problem they were all over it! The printing in mediocre at best and they tease you with deals that always have a short deadline so you never get a chance to use them.
I settled on SmugMug. They are great for so many reasons and have come through for me every time! Down load the printer profile and you will get pretty close to what you envisioned for your image. I did some test prints from Smug Mug, luster. matte. glossy. and metallic, plus what I have ordered. They were great!
That being said….
Each image has it own needs! Making the choice of which finish is a matter of taste, framing, glass treatment, where itβs going to be placed, etc. I have done prints that I wondered if I would change to another finish next time. A few! So! Matte or Glossy? Luster works as the default finish, but have realized that itβs better to be bold in your choices for print! You were bold when you took the shot. Why stop at the printing? -

I am partial to matte. I love the texture of it. I have to agree with others though that it does depend on the photo.

Just to mess things up a little, I’m a semi gloss kinda gal. However, I do like some of the textured papers out there, esp Hahnemuhle paper. The picture feels so good (and looks good too!).

a fence sitter, susandavid.
I know a few people who print onto art paper. If I can ever break into Christines strong room where she does her water colours I’ll give it a try. Keep you informed -

Semigloss Susandavid? Isn’t that like having your cake and eating it too? π Soft black and white images need soft matte paper. Bold BLACK and WHITE images.. now will they look good on matte? maybe semi gloss… now Canon or Nikon??? Hmmm?

Yup that me a fence sitter. I do admit the glossy is exceptional for some prints but it’s the damn fingermarks I keep leaving behind that makes me stay away from it. I’m so bad at that. I really do like the textured mattes a LOT for my black and whites. But semi-gloss works good for all the ones going under glass. I like it…i’ve used it for years..and I’m happy π
P.S. Nikon rules π

@admin LOL Someone had to finally do it. When I’m teaching my group meetings I like to stress that it’s not about the camera or the paper you use it’s the individual behind the camera that takes the photograph that’s important. The camera, paper, etc. are just tools to do that.
