Hi Rob,
I like the B&W treatment and I also like the 30s smoothness of the water.
But the image does not work for me.You have a strong leading line but it is leading to nothing.
The water in the FG is nice and smooth, but it does not have enough to catch my interest.
The sky has on the right some stars, but they are not spectacular.
(and there are some lens dust or artifacts that I should remove)Because I could not understand why it did not work for me, I downloaded the image and tried a few things.
A crop from the bottom, almost 30%, helps. But it is not enough. You still look at nothing.
Then I decided to try to replace the sky with a sky with more stars.
That does work.
If you replace the sky with a sky with more stars, then suddenly the leading line, leads to something. Here is a very, very sloppy replacement sky, but it will give you the general idea.

This is nice. Those little fluffy clouds on the horizon are a bit of a distraction. I like Erik’s sky treatment but would remove the fluffy clouds. I don’t agree about needing a subject and like the minimalist look.

Rob, I just looked at this on my hugo monitor and I think the sky and the whole thing looks really good as is. Like Erik’s better small. There must be something with the stars for the Australia question. If you posted it upside down…

i like erik’s crop, but i’d leave it at that other than a good clean up of dust.
it’s not the stars or the fact that it was originally shot upside down (we all know it was rob, don’t deny it). those clues would be indicative a location south of the equator, but aren’t specific to australia. i’m guessing it’s the idiot out there trying to surf at night that is the give away that it’s australia and not uganda or bolivia.

Allows Edits? YesWhere are you guys seeing the dust? Sure you’re not seeing the stars?
(Although my whole setup is in major need of a clean).
But yeah, Southern Cross (which yeah, ok, technically is visible from anywhere in the Sthern hemisphere, but jeesh – gimme a break).
And what’s wrong with night time surfing anyway?

Patrick has highlighted the dust spots, Rob… there is also another spot between the first and second post on the RH side, just above the board walk.

nothing is wrong with nighttime surfing, but pretty sure you’ll only find it occurring repetitively in california and australia. and let’s be honest, every beast in australia is designed to kill you.

Allows Edits? YesI took my kids with me on this shoot. There were a LOT of bluebottles around, but we didn’t find any blue ringed octopuses or sharks. So winning!
